On Tuesday night, May 28, Chaverim (K-2nd grade) and some Pre-K friends met in Eisner Commons for a night of Jewish baking!
Together, we learned to make apple kugel and chocolate rugelach.
First, we took turns adding cinnamon and sugar to some pre-sliced apples and put the seasoned apples in a baking dish. Then, we helped to combine flour, oil, an egg, baking powder, and some other ingredients in a bowl, and we each got to scoop some of the mess on top of the apples before we put the baking dish in the oven for one hour.
While the kugel was baking, we rolled out our rugelach dough (donated by Zur of Pomegranate Catering!) into rectangles. We took turns mixing together bitter chocolate, sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder in a bowl, and padded this mix into the dough before rolling it up and chopping it into “rugelach pieces.”
While the rugelach (and the kugel) baked, we played upstairs in the gym.
Everyone got to take some of their treats home!
This was the last event of the year for Chaverim…we can’t wait to see you next fall when our Pre-K friends will become regular attendees!
(Sorry these photos are a little bit dark.)
Have a great week.
