Chaverim Bakes Rugelach and Apple Kugel!

On Tuesday night, May 28, Chaverim (K-2nd grade) and some Pre-K friends met in Eisner Commons for a night of Jewish baking!

Together, we learned to make apple kugel and chocolate rugelach.

First, we took turns adding cinnamon and sugar to some pre-sliced apples and put the seasoned apples in a baking dish. Then, we helped to combine flour, oil, an egg, baking powder, and some other ingredients in a bowl, and we each got to scoop some of the mess on top of the apples before we put the baking dish in the oven for one hour.

While the kugel was baking, we rolled out our rugelach dough (donated by Zur of Pomegranate Catering!) into rectangles. We took turns mixing together bitter chocolate, sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder in a bowl, and padded this mix into the dough before rolling it up and chopping it into “rugelach pieces.”

While the rugelach (and the kugel) baked, we played upstairs in the gym.

Everyone got to take some of their treats home!

This was the last event of the year for Chaverim…we can’t wait to see you next fall when our Pre-K friends will become regular attendees!

(Sorry these photos are a little bit dark.)

Have a great week.

Atid Day at the Beach

It certainly felt like beach-weather here in Pittsburgh…but yesterday, Atid travelled to the beach in ISRAEL!

Atid Day at the Beach Bike Takeoff

Atid Day at the Beach Paddleball

Atid Day at the Beach Wii

Atid Day at the Beach

First, our 3rd-5th graders, and also 2nd graders, who will be in Atid next year, met in the Youth Lounge for some pizza and snacks.

Then we played  different games to learn more about being at the beach in Israel.

We played paddleball (“matkot” – which we learned means hit), and kept track of how many hits each partner could make by counting together in Hebrew.

Then, we talked about the “tayelet” (promenade) and some activities that people might do on a walkway alongside the beach. We set up a triathlon in the gym to participate in some of these activities together. In our triathlon, we bicycled, walked, and then crab-walked along three walls of the gym.

When we finished our race, we all enjoyed popsicles (“kartiv”) and of course, time on the Wii. It was a really fun afternoon.

Thanks to the 13 friends who joined us to learn all about the beach!

See you next year, Atid!!

We Need Your Help

Help our Youth Department by taking just a few minutes to fill out these three quick forms! Thank you for your support.

1) Youth High Holiday Registration!

We ask that you please register your children for our High Holiday services in advance – so that we can plan programming and staff accordingly over the summer.

The High Holidays are very early on the secular calendar this year, so register today!

2) A Youth Programming Survey!

This new survey will provide valuable feedback for our Youth Department. We need your input to make Chaverim, Atid, Kadima and USY the best they can be. Answer a few short questions for us! Thank you.

3) List your birthday, anniversary or Yahrzeit, or take out an ad, in our Youth Calendar!

Find the form in this week’s home mailing, pick one up in the front office or anytime you’re at Beth Shalom, or email Carolyn at youthdirector@bethshalompgh.org for your form.

And make sure you…
