for newborns to 12th grade!*

Friday Evening Youth Services

Shababababa (For newborns- 8 years of age)

Join us on the 4th Shabbat of every month for our joyful Shababababa designed for families with newborns-8 years of age.  Shababababa allows the whole family to sing, dance and hear stories as we welcome in Shabbat together.  Rabbi Donni Aaron will help engage our children in a joyful and warm Shabbat experience culminating in blessing our children, singing Friday night Shabbat blessings and sharing a kid-friendly Shabbat dinner together.

Shabbat Alive (For entire congregation)

Held on the second Friday night of every month, Shabbat Alive services are modeled after the warm, community    Shabbat services at Camp Ramah and other Jewish summer camps, setting the traditional Kabbalat Shabbat prayers to melodies that bring out the ruach (spirit) of Shabbat in everyone.  Led by Rabbi Werbow, Cantor Ben, and Rabbi Donni, Shabbat Alive is the perfect transition from the chaos of the workweek into the peace of Shabbat.

Shabbat Morning

Shalom Shabbat – (For newborns-4 years of age)

 10:00am playroom;  11:00am Service

Shalom Shabbat provides a Shabbat experience for families with children who are four years of age and younger.  We welcome the youngest members of our synagogue with their families to joyfully discover the format of the Shabbat service. Children will learn basic prayers and symbols of Shabbat, dance in a Torah parade, hear stories on the weekly Torah portion and recite prayers over challah and grape juice. We hope to nurture a spirit of wonder and learning for our toddlers in a lively and exciting environment.

Chaverim – (For children in Kindergarten-2nd Grade)

10:00am playroom; 11:00am Service

Chaverim provides a Shabbat experience for families with children who are in Kindergarten through Second grade.  Families will participate in a child friendly service consisting of the basic elements of the Shabbat service which is

presented in an environment where our children can ask questions freely, and shape their own experiences.  We incorporate prayer, stories and songs as well as offer a creative introduction to the weekly Torah portion (Parashat Hashavua) using our illustrated Torah. This service is designed to teach our children the rhythm and structure of a

Shabbat morning service and to prepare them for their “graduation” to Youth Minyan.

Youth Minyan (A learner’s minyan for youth and adults, 3rd-7th grades)

10:30am

Youth Minyan provides a dynamic learner’s minyan geared to students in 3rd – 7th grades as well as a beginning learner’s service for the congregation.  As an interactive Shabbat experience, Youth Minyan will include students learning to lead parts of the service and reading from the Torah. As a teaching service, Youth Minyan sometimes varies the melodies, emphasizes different parts of the service, or explores the meaning and spirit of different prayers.  Students will also be engaged in a discussion of the weekly Torah portion. Students who attend regularly find that this helps enormously with their preparation towards becoming a Bar or Bat MitzvahYouth Minyan is also a great setting for families who want to learn and worship together in an informal setting.

Teen Tefillah –  (For Youth in Grades 8th-12th)

 10:30 am

Teen Tefillah is an open discussion-based service experience for our teens. Each year, we choose a new study topic together and study one chapter per week throughout the year in the Lehman Center on the 2nd floor, with prepared questions and commentary from the USY Religion/Educational Vice President as well as with open discussion and questions from those who attend. Teen Tefillah is interactive and open to those with a wide range of experience with Jewish texts. The discussion is led by USY under the guidance of our USY advisor, Sam Mellits, who brings 8 years of Camp Ramah experience and a love of Jewish learning and Israel to the table. This year, we are studying Pirkei Avot. Join us!
